“Did you want to watch a movie or something or are you ready for bed?” David hoped she wanted to hang out a bit, but understood if she’d rather not.

She shrugged and laughed. “Both?”

“That could be arranged.” He said jokingly. With a laugh, he locked the door and turned off the lights to head upstairs as well.

“I need to shower, but okay.” He heard her say.

His first thought was it was a good thing the lights were out because he felt his eyes pop open and his jaw drop. “What?”

“Let’s watch a movie upstairs.” Chloe said way more casually than he felt.

“Umm,” he swallowed, trying to be calm, “okay.”

“You get it set up. I’ll shower real quick.” She walked up the stairs and went into her room, and David went into his own.

He grabbed the small dresser in the room with both hands and took a steadying breath. He didn’t know what this meant, but he felt like a teenage boy again, going out with a girl for the first time.

Once he felt like he had regained some composure, he let go of the dresser and dug out some clothes. Changing quickly into some shorts and a clean shirt, he tucked a condom he’d bought the other day into his pocket and grabbed his pillow.

In her bedroom, he sat on top of the covers, laid back against the pillow and headboard, and started searching for movies to watch on the streaming service. He heard the shower turn off and had to adjust his seat, nerves creeping back up again.

She was out of the shower and in the room in no time flat. “Hey.” She greeted him as she walked in, still brushing her hair.

“Hey.” He immediately regretted the lame repetition of what she said instead of saying anything else.

She sat the brush down and drew back the covers, sliding in next to him and getting comfortable. “What’d you find to watch?”

“Nothing yet. What are you in the mood for?”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“Helpful,” Daniel teased.

“Just pick something.” She told him.

He had no idea when he clicked on. The scent of her shampoo, fruity and sweet, was drifting up to his nose, and it was overwhelming all his senses.

Having clicked on something, he set the remote between them, a weak barrier, letting her know he didn’t intend to cross the line with her.

“Aren’t you cold?” She asked him.

“A little. I might go get a blanket in a bit.”

“Get under the covers, then.” She rolled her eyes.

“Chloe,” his voice gravelly even to his own ears. “I’m trying really hard here.”

“Oh, fine.” She tossed the covers back and climbed over him, straddling his legs and sitting on his lap.

“Chloe.” He ground out as he gripped the covers, attempting to keep his hands off her.

“David,” she answered.

“I think maybe you had more to drink than you thought.” David didn’t know how to disentangle himself from her without touching her.

“I did not. I just want this.” She looked down at him and he knew his face was strained as he held tight onto his last thread of sanity.
